Epok vs Splunk

Splunk is the original log analytics platform. It does everything: search, dashboards, SIEM, machine learning, compliance reporting. It also meters by volume and typically wants dedicated Splunk admins to operate. Epok ingests logs, metrics, traces, RUM and session replay into its own pipeline and produces evidence with receipts and coverage for your team and agents to check.

The 14-day evaluation

Evaluate Epok alongside Splunk. Check the evidence.

01

Choose a representative boundary

Mirror a service group, ownership domain, environment, or critical user journey through OTel or an open shipper.

02

Keep every alert

Splunk remains the control while Epok watches the same production window.

03

Score the incident cohort

Classify correct, incorrect, abstained, and missed outcomes; measure alert fanout, time to verified cause, and responder effort.

Success is not “data arrived” or one anecdote. Expansion requires performance across the agreed incident cohort and operational gates.

Epok vs Splunk at a glance — what each product is, how it bills, who operates it, how data gets in, and how detection is set up.
DimensionSplunkEpok
What it isA general-purpose data platform for logs, IT operations and security, with Splunk Observability Cloud alongside it for metrics, APM and RUM.An evidence engine on its own ingest pipeline. Logs, metrics, traces, infrastructure, RUM and replay become evidence with receipts and coverage for your team and AI agents.
Billing basisThree published models: ingest pricing per GB per day, workload pricing in Splunk Virtual Compute units, and entity pricing per host for the observability products. Each plan includes one unified volume allowance. Paid-plan overage is $0.20/GB; there is no per-host, per-user, per-custom-metric, per-query or cardinality line.
Who runs itSplunk Enterprise is self-managed — you run indexers, search heads and forwarders. Splunk Cloud Platform is hosted.Hosted SaaS. Nothing for you to deploy, scale or upgrade.
Data collectionUniversal and heavy forwarders plus the HTTP Event Collector; the OpenTelemetry Collector for Observability Cloud. No proprietary Epok server agent: send with OTLP or an open shipper such as Vector, Fluent Bit, Fluentd or the OpenTelemetry Collector. Browser RUM and replay require web instrumentation.
How detection is set upSearches, correlation searches and alerts you author in SPL. IT Service Intelligence is a separately licensed premium product.Immediate rule packs begin matching supported signals as data arrives. Statistical detectors activate after they have the required history and signal coverage; threshold rules remain available when you want them.

What changes with Epok

An evidence engine for your team and your agents.

Epok owns the pipeline from ingest to evidence; it is not an overlay on Splunk. Logs, metrics, traces and real-user data become evidence items with stable IDs, typed values, receipts and coverage. Use open shippers — no proprietary Epok agent for server-side telemetry. Browser RUM and replay use web instrumentation.

Your on-call team follows receipts in the app, Slack and PagerDuty. AI agents read the same evidence through the MCP agent gateway, with access on request. Coverage distinguishes found, none in retained data and not run; missing inputs and partial windows stay visible.

Recovery starts with change and blast radius while root-cause analysis continues. For known failure shapes, Epok recommends reversible actions from runbooks and built-in playbooks, with guards and an undo path. We recommend; you execute. Epok commits a cause only with supporting evidence; otherwise it abstains, explains the gap and says what to check next.

Pricing model
SplunkPer-GB ingested (Cloud) or license-based (Enterprise). Costs scale with volume.
EpokFlat monthly pricing. No per-event fees, no cardinality tax, no query tax. Trial includes all detectors and full AI.
Search language
SplunkSPL — extremely powerful, steep learning curve. Full pipeline syntax with 140+ commands.
EpokA simpler search syntax, similar power for log search and filtering. Fewer commands, faster to learn.
Anomaly detection
SplunkSplunk ITSI and MLTK — separate products with additional licensing.
EpokAutomatic detection on every tier — new failures, anomalies, silent services, regressions, and cascades. No rules to write.
Dashboards
SplunkYes — extensive builder with hundreds of visualization types, drilldowns, report scheduling.
EpokBasic. Service-level dashboards, volume charts, detector views. Not a general-purpose BI tool.
Data onboarding
SplunkRequires props.conf, transforms.conf, index definitions, and input config. Forwarder architecture.
EpokSend JSON over HTTP. Elasticsearch bulk, Loki push, OTLP, syslog, FluentBit, and more. Use open shippers — no proprietary Epok agent for server-side telemetry.
Root cause analysis
SplunkManual investigation with SPL queries. ITSI has service-level views. No automatic RCA.
EpokAutomatic What Changed analysis, dimension lift and causal ordering. Cited cause only with supporting evidence IDs and receipts; otherwise abstention, missing evidence and next checks; AI-enhanced explanations on Team
SIEM / Security
SplunkSplunk Enterprise Security is the industry-leading SIEM. Compliance, SOC workflows, threat intel.
EpokBasic security detection only. Pattern-based rules, no compliance frameworks, no SOC workflows.
Scale
SplunkScales to petabytes per day. Distributed indexer clusters, search-head clusters, S3-backed storage.
EpokGrowth includes 4 TB/month (~135 GB/day); Custom tiers negotiate higher volumes. Not built for sustained petabyte-per-day ingest.
Setup time
SplunkDays to weeks for production. Requires a dedicated Splunk admin for ongoing maintenance.
EpokMinutes. Send logs, detectors activate automatically. No configuration for core intelligence.

Where Splunk wins

Splunk is unmatched for compliance, SIEM, and organizations with petabyte-scale log volumes. If you need compliance audit trails, HIPAA controls, security analytics, or a mature ecosystem of apps and integrations, Splunk is purpose-built for that. Its search language (SPL) is the most powerful in the industry, and its distributed architecture handles volumes single-node systems cannot.

Choose Epok when

  • —You want anomaly detection and root cause analysis out of the box, without writing SPL queries or buying ITSI.
  • —Your telemetry volume fits a few TB/day and you'd rather not maintain forwarder infrastructure.
  • —You need to be operational in minutes, not weeks — no forwarders, no index configuration, no admin training.

Choose Splunk when

  • —You need a SIEM with compliance reporting, threat intelligence, and SOC workflows (Splunk Enterprise Security).
  • —You ingest petabytes per day and need distributed indexing across dozens of nodes with SmartStore.
  • —You have a dedicated Splunk team and a mature ecosystem of apps, dashboards, and saved searches.
Evaluation setup

Ship to both for the evaluation.

Epok accepts logs over the same protocols your existing infrastructure already speaks. If you use a Universal or Heavy Forwarder, point a copy of your logs at Epok's HTTP endpoint. If you use FluentBit, Fluentd, or Vector, add Epok as an output alongside Splunk to evaluate side by side.

No schema mapping, no index creation, no props.conf. Send JSON and Epok starts detecting.

Check the evidence. Then decide.

Run a controlled shadow evaluation across a representative boundary. Compare both systems on the same incident cohort, then expand only after Epok clears the agreed quality, security, and operational gates.
